Asbestos Roof Removal Regulations and Compliance

Asbestos Roof Removal

If you fear that the roof of your domestic or commercial property in Auckland may have asbestos, you would have good reason to be concerned.

The natural fibrous material of asbestos was once widely used for roofing projects. However, such usage of asbestos has been phased out due to growing knowledge of health risks posed by the material.

The good news is that, if you ask Reliable Contracting Group to undertake asbestos roof removal on your behalf, you can rest assured that we will follow all regulations and legal requirements applicable to this work. Here is an overview of various measures routinely taken by our asbestos roof removal specialists.

We Follow Safe Work Practices

In September 2016, WorkSafe New Zealand’s Code of Practice for the Management and Removal of Asbestos was approved by Hon Michael Woodhouse, the then-Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety, under section 222 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.

The Code advises that, wherever possible, asbestos should be wet before it is removed lest asbestos fibres are generated in needlessly excessive numbers. The Code also urges asbestos removers to enact suitable measures for controlling the risk of airborne asbestos fibre generation.

How Do We Dispose of Asbestos Waste?

The Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016 call on asbestos removers to confirm that asbestos waste is suitably contained and clearly marked before it is removed.

We also transfer asbestos waste to closed containers before disposing of it. The disposal itself must take place at a landfill site a territorial local or territorial authority has approved for this purpose.

The asbestos remover will also need to hold a particular permit before they can arrange for the burial of asbestos at a landfill. Again, this is a requirement that Reliable Contracting Group meets as standard.

Get in Touch with Us for Asbestos Roof Removal

If you can’t be certain whether or not your roof indeed contains asbestos, you could request that we carry out an asbestos removal survey. If asbestos is detected, we can — with your permission — proceed to safely remove this potentially lethal silicate mineral from the roof in a legally complaint manner.
