Asbestos is a term that both homeowners and business owners should be aware of. In fact, if your home or building was built prior 2000, then it might be worthwhile to have your property inspected for asbestos.

So, when was asbestos banned in NZ and why?

What Is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was used for a wide range of purposes, including for construction and manufacturing. Asbestos was a popular product in the industrial sector, mainly because it was malleable, waterproof, flameproof, and resistant to chemicals and electricity.

Asbestos Health Risks

Asbestos is a proven carcinogen – the greater the exposure to the mineral, the higher the risk of developing an asbestos-related disease. There are several diseases linked to asbestos exposure, including:

  • Asbestosis
  • Mesothelioma
  • Pleural plaques
  • Cancer of the ovary, lung, and larynx

When Did Asbestos Stop Being Used in NZ?

Despite its usefulness, it became clear that asbestos was directly linked to health problems (as mentioned above). In New Zealand, asbestos awareness had started in the 1930s, but asbestos usage continued.

It was only in 1984 that it became illegal to import blue and brown asbestos into New Zealand in its raw form. By 1987, asbestos use was phased out. From 2016, the importation of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) into the country was banned.

However, many buildings that were built prior 2000 may still contain asbestos and ACMs. Since asbestos fibres aren’t always obvious, it’s possible that many Kiwis are still living in homes that contain asbestos – having your property inspected is key to prioritising the health of your family and/or employees and customers.

Despite asbestos being banned in NZ, many homes and buildings still contain traces of asbestos.
